The risk of anesthesia awareness

By Marc Meisfelt (2010)

Numerous risks are associated with anesthesia, especially general anesthesia. While discussing them is beyond the scope of this website, any Google search on the topic will come up with many relevant leads.

The principal philosophical, not medical, reason why I do not consider general anesthesia appropriate for any cosmetic surgery procedure, is the risk, however small, of anesthesia awareness.

To undergo a surgical operation under full anesthesia (sedation plus muscle relaxant), and then to wake up in the course of it, feeling all the pain but being unable to give notice in any form to the surgical team, is such a horror scenario that in retrospect, it would result in a negative pleasure balance for even the most fulfilled life.

Anyway, no general anesthesia is necessary for any cosmetic surgery, as discussed on the pages linked to below.
